Community Lecture: The role of the Society in the Fight Against Drugs

On the 10th of March 2017, Puan Kartina Ujin, the deputy director of the state agency, gave a speech about the role of the society in the fight against drugs. My school, 1st Kuching, and several schools with totaled up to about a hundred scouts attended this lecture. First she explained about the common drugs that are being used in Malaysia, a few of them are the Heroin and Ganja. She later explained the type of drugs that enter Malaysia and the most common places in Malaysia with drugs such as Rantau Panjang... etc. She then showed us a short video titled, "Tool Story". the video explained that if we don't follow our own roles, we cannot get things done right. Because of that, we must not follow other people's roles but follow the role that suits us best. After the video, she explained that taking drugs makes a person psychoactive and affecting the mind. After that, she explained, "What Is Drugs?" and how does drugs make us psychoactive. She also explained the four stages of drug consumption, the positive and negative effects of drug consumption. She explained how the symptom affects a drug user after 7 weeks. Some of the effects of Ganja were a disturbance of sleep and bad dreams, anxiety, temperamental and perspire and loss of appetite. She later showed us the drug statics in Malaysia. The total population of drug intake in 2015 were 227,385 people. It later increased to 282,660 people in the year 2016 aged 18 - 39% (73:4%). She later talked about community challenges and self prevention in taking drugs. She also talked about community empowerment. About how starting progammes that impart knowledge and understanding about the dangers of drugs. Finally, after the lecture ended there was a Q & A session. About three to four people asked questions about drug intake for people in adolescence smelling glue. She then answered about how parents need to discipline their child and help them acknowledge that glue is made for industrial purposes. After the lecture, we exited the auditorium and were handed a bag of muffins and a boxed drink. I took a few pictures before leaving and went home with the new knowledge that I had learnt about drugs intake and why we should avoid them.
