Community development project: Drug awareness program in Jhapa, Nepal

The F-NPP team got an invitation to visit one of the 7 ongoing community development projects around Nepal. The 7 community development projects are activities included into the project. The number of drug users has raised recently in Jhapa district mainly among youths. The community development project is thus about raising awareness on drugs that can help empower and aware youths about the harmful effects of drugs and drug abuse. In both visited schools, the visitors were welcomed warmly and with huge curiosity. At the first school the participants were interviewed from the following topics: What did you learn? How can you implement the things you learned in your community? Do you think that the things you learned could be beneficial to your community? The participants had learned about harmful use of drugs, drug abuse within community and society and about the harm it does to an individual and his or her surroundings. One thing that came into discussion was the importance of the students to spread the things they have learned within their communities and interact with one another and their parents. The next school the team visited was Bhadrapur school where the class was run by boys scouts of Jhapa district. The class was about how the use of drugs affects the society, individuals, families, and what are the reasons behind the use of drugs. The students were from classes 9 and 10. Both boys and girls were actively present during the lesson. In both schools the students were also provided information sheets after the class. By interviewing the participants following things were said: "The training benefits community and individual, it saves lives of individuals and helps to create a peaceful society." "The use of drugs creates conflicts within society and if we stopped using drugs, this could also create peace within society." "If one person uses drugs it disturbs his/her whole family" "The class was interesting and I was impressed by the activities done by the scouts." "After seeing what kinds of activities the scouts are running, I'm interested in joining the scouts."
