Clean up the Lourens River

We have a river running past out Scout hall and noticed a large amount of plastic and other waste being caught up on the banks. Down River is a Marine Protected Area and we identified that we can make a start in keeping this waste out of that area. It is an ongoing project. We also help with keeping the marine Protected area clean.
The project was implemented in the Strand along the Lourens River that flows down from the Helderberg to the sea with its out let to the sea in False Bay. How did we execute the project we ask the scouts to join us in an ongoing basis to bring work gloves and we supply the refuse bags. Once the rubbish is collected we take it to a municipal waste treatment site.
The impact was not specific to a community of people but it is having a small impact on the amount of rubbish, plastic and paper that is finding its way to the sea and there having an impact on the natural fauna.
The learnings we got from the project is that we as a human species are wasteful and have no regard for the planet we live on. We have also realised that this project will not have an ending in the near future. it is an ongoing project and we do not have enough person power to make more than a minor difference to the environment.
