Celebrating Janitors and Cooks at Bhutan.

May 2nd in Bhutan is celebrated as Teacher's Day to pay tribute to teachers. However, we also have other staff such as janitors, cooks and other supporting staff who are equally important and irreplaceable in their own duties. Unfortunately, they don't have separate day to celebrate and thank them. The School Mess Day was observed on 08th May, 2021 to thank our cooks and supporting staff for their noble contributions in the journey of students’ education.
The School Mess Day was implemented at our school (Dorokha HSS, Bhutan). To celebrate the day, teacher volunteers replaced their days duties. Starting from 3 AM, the volunteers were engaged in preparing breakfast for students. During Morning assembly, I as a coordinator, Principal sir and student representative thanked them for their service and presented gifts. While, volunteers were preparing lunch, they were engaged in carrom board competition. We lunched together prepared by volunteers.
The message from this program was clear to 600 students and 57 staff. Every personnel in our school are equally important and irreplaceable in our own duties. We must value our janitors and cooks equal to Principal. This celebration has impact to built good rapport amongst all staff and students view our cooks and janitors with respect.
I have learned that as a team, we must motivate one another to make ones stay better and shoulder the duty even more emotionally.
