Building Self-Advocacy Skills for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
The Crew first had a discussion about how each person felt when someone first used a derogatory term to describe a person with intellectual disabilities in their presence. Those who were able also spoke about how they handled it, if they took the time to tell the person it was wrong, etc. The Crew brainstormed various ways to handle this scenario and spoke about being empowered to speak up for themselves and for others who may not be able to do so. They practiced how they would say this. Crew member put their commitment into action by pledging never to use the "R" word, themselves.
