Brothers 4 Life,The Gender Based Violence Campaign

The initial plan of the event was to host a camp over a weekend (Friday-Sunday) in which we were to give the boys/male participants time away from their households and surrounding and for us to get an opportunity to intensively council them, address all issues that affect them as young men and give them skill for better living, under the following objectives.

Every day we  are encounter with news implicating that boys/young man have become monsters and are killing this great nation, however more and more program are made to benefit the girl child more than the boy child. As a young man myself im being cluster as trash because of what other man are doing, that’s why I have resorted to hosting an event which aims to

  • Create a platform for YOUNG man to come together and actively deliberate on issues affecting them especially in scouting and other youth organizations

  • Create an active campaign against the ruthless against women and children

  • Provide a support structure for men like a forum

 The event

We had a total of 150 participants who took part in the event. All participants were picked up and brought to the Scouts center (event venue) .
Upon arrival, we commenced with the registrations, participants were welcomed, introduced to the team and were given an outline and purpose of the event.
The program ran as scheduled and all speakers who were invited gave their presentations, and were on time. The event started on Friday to Saturday were they were transported back to their assembly point at the drop off center (Tetlanyo high school).

 The objectives
Create a platform for YOUNG men to come together and actively deliberate on issues affecting them especially in scouting and other youth organizations.
Address all issues affecting them in and out of school, as well as share experiences and coping mechanisms.
As participants started to know and become comfortable around each other, more personal discussions were held, and this was done according to their age.
As conversations/discussions were held (over a safe non-disclosure, non-judgmental space) advices and coping/dealing strategies and support was offered, which provided a platform to discuss other social issues and give way forward and strategies were drafted by the participants.
Specialists /accredited/registered professionals and mentors offered assistance and support throughout the event.
Facilitators were available to assist with advice and guidance, even assisted with topics discussed over the camp fire (on Friday night). Participants were given a platform to discuss issues they need more information and guidance on (eg religion and the role it plays in society withing this century).
Saturday morning; Clinical psychologist Dr. Oscar Motswaleng addressed issues of self actualization and mental health.

Provide skills for better living
During the know yourself activities boys went through a journey of self discovery where they had help on any topic which they wanted to talk about and ask guidance where they needed it most
NYDA had a presentation which dealt with how to develop yourself (professionally) and  how to draft a proper business plan, ensuring that all those interested in starting a business knows which guidelines to follow and where to start (looking for funding and training).
Career guidance and how to market yourself.
Participats were taught about strengths and weaknesses, and the roles of them in developing and shaping yourself in achieving their goals.
We had a fun walk, in support of all rape victims and women & children (who survived and those who are currently suffering from gender based violence) . This campaign/activity was held on the 1st day of the camp (Friday). A lot of attention and support was given to participants by the public, and were asked  questions during the walk. We had a positive outcome from the campaign. The boys were eagerly motivated after the rape victim shared her story and motivated the boys

Evaluation
Later that evening we had an evaluation with all participants of the camp, where most were pleased and satisfied with the outcomes reached.

We believe that once you put your mind to something then you can achieve it. The highlight of the event/project was the gender based violence campaign.

In this campaign we made a statement that not in our name will women be violated and abused in our society and local community. Where we pledge to be part of the change and not the problem.

We would like to thank all people who made it possible for success of the event, including the organizing team , participants, mentors and all stakeholders. This event would have not been possible without all their hard work and dedication
We are ready and waiting the next event
