BETTERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH SOLAR EDUCATION
Muneno school is a rural centre that offers ICT lectures to students but without electricity on the compass it takes a 10km walk to get to the nearest laptop charging place. With only 2 laptops at the school , it would take months for the whole school to have a practical computer session on a working machine. This was the same with charging cellphones - prininting school work ,lighting for night exam classes. A simple solar system was gonna meet the need and help both students and staff.
We did the solar activities at Muneno Primary school that is located in Mrewa district under Muneno village hence the school name. We started working together with the School administration we engaged the community authorities who graced our activities. This helped us get the community to own the initiative. We went with a team of locally trained solar innovators ,experts and solar ambassadors who assisted in the Solar PV installation at the school and community sensitisation activities.
On the day of activities after the system installation, we directly reached out to about 600 students and parents who both learned a lot from the Solar Road Show (exhibition points) we had set up to help raise awareness. These made a commitment to share the awareness with their families and other communities. This helped the project to reach even more than 400 other people.
Ruraland marginal commuities are facing real challenges that need real sound solutions. In doing so we need to be well prepared and consider them part of the sustanibility plan.
