80th D-Day Anniversary: Sharing a Message of Peace
The Troop’s Battle of the Bulge trip to Bastogne in December 2023 inspired Scouts to learn more about the historic events that occurred almost 80 years prior in Europe and the peaceful progress that followed. The Scouts requested help from the leaders to plan a trip to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The goal was to learn about the end of WWII and spread a message of peace and friendship through the global movement of Scouting.
Scouts researched D-Day. To make this trip affordable, Scouts were involved in the financial planning of the trip and campout taskings. Because of the close relationship with the host town, the Troop was immersed in the local events, guests of honor at ceremonies: Participation in British War Cemetery ceremonies, special guest at Cérémonie Franco-Norvégienne, lowering of flags at Brittany Cemetery, Normandy American Cemetery visit.
Scouts learned about the strength of Scouting as a lifelong connection of people from across the globe and Messengers of Peace. They spoke to people of all ages from diverse backgrounds and nationalities.
