11th National Cubboree – Sri Lanka Scout Association,- World & Sri Lanka Cub Scout Centenary in Galle

‘Towards another beautiful century’: The 11th National Cubboree was held from May 13 – 15, 2016 at Richmond College. It was opened by the Chief Guest, Governor of Southern Province, Hon. Hemakumara Nanayakkara. The Cubboree also celebrates 100 years of cub scouting in Sri Lanka. Ms. Gita Perera (Assistant Chief Commissioner (Cubs), the Organizing Commissioner delivered the welcome address followed by a talk by the Chief Scout Commissioner Prof. Nimal de Silva. The Chief Guest recalled the days when he was a scout at Richmond College and related incidents of his scouting career and referred to the present Chief Commissioner as his Scout Leader when he was a scout. He said that he learnt how to lead a good life through scouting. He said children will become useful citizens of the country through the scout movement. The principal of Richmond College Mr. Sampath Weragoda and District Scout Commissioner of Galle Mr. Ananda Alwis also addressed the gathering. A special commemoration stamp was issued to mark 100 years of cub scouting in Sri Lanka and the world. Cub teachers who had completed over 25 years of service were given awards recognizing their longstanding services to Cub Scouting. Six-thousand cub scouts and 800 Akelas from 29 Scout Districts participated. Arrangements were made to accommodate the cubs in schools provided with all basic amenities. During the Cubboree the Cubs took part in art, singing and other activities. An exhibition was also held. A colorful arena display was followed by the Red Flower.
