10 Petaling Junior Camp 2017
This will be first camp for most new Scouts of 10 Petaling from SMK Sultan Abdul Samad. The days started off with bad weather so all activities had to be carried out indoors. A simple registration and splitting up of patrols for the new members followed by a short briefing. After that, a simple flag ceremony was held as well as the appointment of 3 new Assistant Scoutmasters to help the troop. The day then carried on with the participants cooking their own dinner and followed with a simple base system for basic Tenderfoot badge knowledge. This includes the Scout Law and Promise, Founder's history, History of Scouting in Malaysia, 6 knots, the Scout logos (PPM and WOSM), Mottos, and the Scout salute/sign. The day ended with a simple lights out.
The following day started with a simple wash up at 6am followed by flag break at 7am. They then made their breakfast while a simple campsite inspection was done. After breakfast, they carried out some simple footdrills to train their teamwork and discipline. This will also help them with their badge investiture later in the night. After that, more physically challenging activities were carried out such as rope climbing, monkey crawl and wall climbing. In between, they had a change to learn how to use a parang or machete to split bamboo and chop fire wood, which was used to cook a simple egg in bamboo backwoods style lunch. This was then carried on through the rainy weather and leading into the night. For dinner, they cooked by themselves as well as having time to wahs up to prepare for their investiture. After their investiture was done, a campfire night or cultural night followed to end the night.
I hope this first time experience broke some barriers for the new Scouts and hopefully they carry their spirit forward to obtain more and achieve more.
