A Tribute to Richard Magongo - Emavulandlela Swaziland Scout Association

The Family Emavulandlela Swaziland Scouts Association And Friend of Richard Magongo Dear Friends, On behalf of the Africa Scout Region, receive our sincerest condolences on the passing on of our brother and friend, Mr. Richard Magongo, who until his death on September 03, 2015 served as the Chief Scout of the Emavulandlela Swaziland Scouts Association. We were indeed saddened by the news of his death Since his appointment by the King King Mswati III of Swaziland on July 27, 2007 he has diligently served the Swaziland Scouts Association as Chief Scout. Mr. Magongo has been involved with Scouting for over five decades - as a young person, as a professional and as an adult volunteer, rising through the ranks and serving in various capacities including longest serving Chief Commissioner in the country During his tenure as Chief Scout, Richard elevated Scouting in Swaziland to new heights. He helped in setting up strong team of leaders to foster partnership for Scouting projects, finances and its connections to Scouting organizations in Africa and beyond. Despite visible opposition he led the introduction of girls in Scouting for the first time in the Kingdom. He also managed to secure land for the Association as well as initiated the “Thirst to Life Project” which has seen a lot of cultural exchanges between Scouts from the United Kingdom and Swaziland He was focused on making sure that youth have a chance in Scouting. He always emphasized on leadership training and development of resources necessary to serve the Scouts. He is also one of the founding members of the Southern Africa Zonal Scout Conference Mr. Richard Magongo built a life in Scouting and always preferred to be a Scout more than being a Chief Scout. He spent his life dedicated to mentoring other and to the service of mankind through his professional career in Scouting and his volunteer efforts through various humanitarian organizations. His colleagues say he was a loyal, friendly, courteous, courageous and considerate man. He didn't mind being one for the benefit of many people. A man who diligently managed to balance the needs of the 21st century youth with the traditional values of the Kingdom, while implementing the priorities of the Scout Movement. A man who understood that he was leading a movement not just a family trust. We believe he has gone home with pride, knowing that he has done his part. His legacy will continue to be seen all over. He will forever be missed. The Scouts of Africa mourn this great hero. We pray that the Almighty God grants his family comfort and the strength to bear his demise. We also encourage the leadership of Emavulandlela Swaziland Scouts Association follow in his footsteps and the dedication he had in serving the Scout Movement. Rest in Peace, brother Richard Magongo!
