Rover Scouts from different Universities in Kenya mentor and also donate some items to boys at Shikutsa Borstal Institution
A group of rover scouts from University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Machakos University and friends visited Shikutsa Borstal Institution in Kakamega County for a mentorship programme.
The boys lack toiletries for use and therefore the scouts also mobilized some funds and bought them a number of these items. Later, the scouts had a session to interact with the boys as they shared their stories and counselled some of them.
Shikutsa Borstal institution is a youthful corrective centre that caters for boys between ages 15-18 years in conflict with law. The institution was established in 1963 by an Act of Parliament Chapter 92 Laws of Kenya necessitated by the need of protected youthful offenders from contamination by mixing them with other criminals.
The institution holds boys for a maximum of three years irrespective of the gravity of the offence. However, those who show positive change can be released after a year. For sustainability, the scouts came to an agreement with the administration to take the 'Extension Scouting Programme' to the institution. This is a programme that is being implemented by the Kenya Scouts Association to reach out to Children Especially in Difficulty Circumstances (CEDC)
