Sweet, sweet, sweet solar music as bright as the sun..., Mamoru Sekiguchi. On the occasion of COP21 in Paris here comes an example of what scouts do worldwide for the climate! Scouts walk the talk! Scouts Go Solar! The enormous amount of energy from the sun reaching the earth is comparable to the warm welcome of the Tagumeños to us solar instructors and we cannot contain it that's a fact indeed. Scouts Go Solar Philippines Instructors Sctr. Doroteo L. Roque, Jr. (James L. Gordon Council), Sctr. Erwin C. Villanueva (Tarlac Council), Sctr. Richard Bagtas (Bulacan Council), Sctr. Sen Harvey Melchor (Leyte Council) and Sctr. Rolando Usita, Jr. (Cagayan North - Tuguegarao City Council) together with other Scouters from different BSP Councils nationwide answered the call to be part of the National Service Team at the 16th National Scout Jamboree held last October 24 - 30 at the Energy Park, Tagum City, Davao del Norte. Sun is energy-a reality that came into focus during the National Scout Jamboree. Scouts Go Solar was part of the special module 8. With the enthusiasm of the team and support from Greenpeace Southeast Asia and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines National Office, we were able to educate thousands of young leaders about the importance of using Clean and Renewable Sources of Energy. The best way to effect change is through educating the youth. Discussion about solar energy, its importance to the people and to the environment is the first part of the event. Young people were so eager to learn about the negative impact of Fossil fuels and Carbon emissions of other sources of energy as well as harnessing the maximum potential energy from the sun was discussed on this activity. Actual showcase of the available gadgets using solar energy such as solar suit case, solar radio, solar lamp, and flashlights was witnessed by the participants both boy scouts and senior scouts including the accompanying adults. To keep the young people and kids excited in engaging with solar activities, the best learning effects and greatest motivation are achieved when they learn by doing. This is important because people lack experiences and have vague ideas about solar energy. It is critical for young people to experience them “hands-on” and learn. Their intense interest in environmental matter specially solar energy is the driving force for young people if what they learn enables them to do something and become active themselves. Scouts were able to experience different Solar Toys (courtesy of RSD Imelda Samson of Northern Luzon Regions), Solar Art, and actual cooking of egg using the Solar Cooker. Serving and teaching the future leaders is a great accomplishment for us. It is indeed significant learning experience for us instructors to be part of this noble endeavor of educating the youth.
