Join the 1 Billion Service Hours Challenge!

Here’s a call to all Scouts and young people out there who are creating a better world (or want to create a better world)! If you are already an active citizen, organising or participating in community service, we invite you to JOIN the 1 BILLION HOURS CHALLENGE today! Why? We want to encourage Scouts and young people around the world to get more involved in community service and contribute more service hours. In April 2015, the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) made a call to action to all Scouts to raise 1 billion community service hours by 2020. We can only achieve this when all Scouts, as Messengers of Peace, SHARE their actions, PHOTOS and STORIES on social media to INSPIRE others to do the same. We need you to become agents of positive change, inspiring others to get involved in our global network of service to drive positive change and make a greater social impact on our communities. So let’s get inspired, get involved, and join the Challenge now at photomissions.scout.org! Let's create a better world! ENTRY DEADLINE: 15 Aug 2015 Criteria Entry must include: • a brief description of the action or service initiative • a photo • a short description of the story behind the photo in 200 words, including the city where it is located, the name of the Scout Patrol/Team/Unit or Group involved, the group of beneficiaries involved, the action performed and the motivation behind the action • date of the activity • number of service hours • number of participants Submitting your entry You will need a scout.org profile in order to submit your entry. Create your profile at www.scout.org/user/register. Your entry needs to be uploaded at photomissions.scout.org. In submitting a photo/story, you agree that the photo becomes the intellectual property of the World Scout Bureau. Once you have uploaded your story, simply wait for the results to be announced. We will contact you if your story is one of the top-rated entries.
Top-rated entries Top 10 entries will be selected from each of the Missions, based on the following criteria: • Photo Only: Best use of photography techniques – featuring Scouts in action rather than posed shots, showcasing the interaction between Scouts and the beneficiaries of the project. • Story Only: Best use of storytelling techniques to describe the motivation behind the action, the action and the outcome. • Photo + Story: Best combination of a good quality photo and a very inspiring story based on the criteria for photo and story. • Most likes: Most “likes” received from the public/Scouts/friends and family after sharing your Mission on social media.
Every participant will receive a digital certificate recognising his or her participation. Top-rated stories and photos will be featured on WOSM’s social media channels, the Better World magazine, regional bulletins and scout.org. Top-rated entries will be announced in September 2015. Special recognition Participants who submit entries that receive top ratings will receive a special certificate issued by the World Scout Bureau. They will also be requested to submit a high-resolution photo to be used by World Scout Bureau.
