Patrimonito Challenge

In case you didn't know…

  • World Heritage is UNESCO’s designation for places that are of outstanding universal value to humanity and have been inscribed on the world heritage list to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
  • Heritage can include cultural, natural or mixed sites, as well as intangible aspects such as languages, dances, food, stories, etc.
  • As of January 2023, there are a total of 1,157 World Heritage Sites located across 167 countries.
  • Armed conflict and war, earthquakes and other natural disasters, pollution, poaching, uncontrolled urbanization and unchecked tourist development pose major problems to World Heritage sites.
  • For example, UNESCO has confirmed that 270 sites have been damaged due to the war in Ukraine (July 2023).

Take this challenge and you’ll be able to:

  • Recognize that world heritage belongs to everyone, not just the country where it's located.
  • Identify different types of heritage.
  • List the unique heritage of your own country.
  • Discover the significance of preserving and restoring archaeological sites.
  • Take action to protect a world heritage site of your choice from the UNESCO list of properties.
