KSA IS SGS/GSAT COMPLIANT

The Kenya Scouts Association is the largest Scout Movement in Kenya and 6th largest in the world with over 1.3 Million boys and girls Scouts with a support team of over 40,000 Scout Leaders. The vision of the Association is to create a better world by educating young people to play a constructive role in society and contributing to their wholistic development; physically, intellectually, socially, spiritually and emotionally. The Association aims at molding individual character potentials of young people to enable them become responsible citizens and members of their local, national and International communities. We are committed to preparing free, supportive, responsible and committed citizens who are needed to build a better Kenya. The Association’s Head Quarters is located at Rowallan National Scouts Camp along Kibera Drive in Nairobi, Kenya. It has at its core a mandate to serve the young people ascribed to the movement with integrity and accountability. For this reason it took it upon itself to undergo an SGS Audit to ensure it ascribes to best Practices by NSOs. This journey began way back in 2012 when the Association underwent its first SGS Audit. In this first Audit, the Association managed a score of 41%. This did not dishearten us but rather stirred up an urge for us to improve on various areas as per the audits recommendations. The Association under the able leadership of the Chief Commissioner Mr Ray Charles Musau and his Management team put in place strategies to ensure that the Association subscribed to best practices and in 2016, the Association requested for a second SGS/GSAT Audit. A lot of preparation went in to ensuring the Audit process went on smoothly. From 2013, the Association set in place a Strategic Plans with deliberate anticipated outcomes in mind. This was to ensure best practices were being applied at every level of the Association’s Management.Tirelessly brain storming on various aspects of the Audit dimensions by the Board members and Management of the Association for several years finally paid off when Association was recommended for certification after undergoing an SGS/GSAT Audit from 28th - 29th of September 2016. The Association had attained a 90.2% score in this audit. The feeling that engulfed the Associations boardroom when the results were announced by the Lead Auditor Ms Sumathy Rajasingham was explosive. It was a great relief for the team especially because it was now a reality that the Association is staying true to it's mandate of service with Integrity, Transparency, Professionalism and Accountability in all areas of operation. Cheerful claps emanated from excited faces of all in the room with mind boggling smiles crowning this great news of success. The sourcing of evidence of practice from several years back, labeling the same, several internal SGS audits and mock SGS Audits facilitated by GSAT Trained Auditors from the region had finally borne great fruits. During the Assessment, the KSA team had an awesome time with the Auditor. Recommendations were made on areas of improvement and after the Audit, a presentation was made by Mr Rashid Mchatta a WOSM GSAT Facilitator to assist the Association map a way forward. The Standard is quite methodical as it touches on all aspects of the operations of an NSOs. It ensures various practices by Association are measurable in that due processes are adhered to in all areas of operations. It ensures developed policies and procedures are practically being applied and upheld in the day today functioning of the Association. Even with the high score there is always room for improvement. The Association is already working on the recommendations put forth by the Auditor and WOSM Facilitator in preparation for the next Audit process. We are determined not only to be the largest Scout Movement in the world but also to continue being a model Association that applies the best practices in which can be emulated by other NSO/AS in Africa and beyond. “It will now be easier to find and work with credible development partners”, said Hon. Francis Ole Kaparo EGH the Association’s Chief Scout on receiving news of the exemplary performance by the Association. He added that partners ate comfortable associating with organizations that have proven record of good management practices. “The certification of KSA is not an end but a confirmation that now the Association has found the formula for managing a Scout Association. The Association’s major focus will be on maintaining the high standards and cascading them to all camps and centers and to the lowest administrative structures of the Association”, said Mr Musau the Association’s Chief Commissioner who is also the Chairman of the Eastern Africa Scout Committee. He further encouraged other NSOs in the Zone to follow suite and get audited so as to carry out their mandate with confidence and due diligence. The Kenya Scouts Association is committed in the nurturing and preparing free, supportive, responsible and committed citizens who are needed to build a better Kenya.
