Plastic pollution on land and water
Nature is not just a place we visit; it is our home. It’s like a big playground where everyone can explore, learn, discover different cultures, and grow spiritually. Within its different ecosystems, we coexist with countless other species, forming a delicate web of life where everyone benefits. All species depend on each other for mutual support and survival.
That is why it is our responsibility to care for our home and all its inhabitants. By nurturing and preserving nature, we can protect the earth's resources and improve our relationship with the natural world.
Why the Plastic Tide Turners challenge?
The Plastic Tide Turners Challenge takes young people on an educational journey that encourages them to understand the impact that humans have on the world when it comes to plastic use and consumption and how you can promote a clean, healthy planet that will contribute to a more sustainable world.
Through its learning process, young people will be able to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes to adopt responsible behavior towards the environment in the area of a “Healthy planet.” This set of competencies is complementary to many others that Scouting recognises through the Earth Tribe Programme and aligned with Education for Sustainable Development Goals.
As a final step in the challenge, a community service project needs to be implemented by the young people applying for the badge. It's the main purpose of the challenge, where all the knowledge and skills gained are put into action, creating a real and positive impact in community.
Who can join the challenge?
This challenge is designed for all young people from seven years and above, eager to discover about plastic pollution and encourage them to play a part in resolving pressing environmental issues, specifically related to plastics, plastic waste, and plastic pollution.
Learning Objectives: What young people will learn along the way?
The Champions for Nature challenge takes young people on the learning path of “Nature and Biodiversity” or “Better choices” depending on the path they choose, where they will progress through three main milestones, which are:
- Be aware of the world around you and key environmental concerns.
- Cooperate with others to find solutions to protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and outdoor spaces.
- Act to develop and implement actions that can make a difference.
Young people can combine the Plastic Tide Turners challenge with other challenges related to the environment to continue the journey of Earth Tribe.
The learning objectives of each challenge not only aim to educate and inspire but also to empower individuals, guiding them step by step on a journey tailored to their age. This personal progression ensures that each young person's knowledge evolves from one activity or project to another and builds competencies for sustainable development.
How can my Scouts earn their badge?
In order for a young person to receive their Plastic Tide Turners badge, they need to follow this process with the support of their Adult Leader as shown below.
As a first step in all challenge, the young person will go through a self-assessment to help them understand where they stand in terms knowledge and awareness related to the learning paths of the challenge.
After completing all of the activities and the community project, the young person becomes a member of the Earth Tribe and a global citizen for the environment. They receive the Earth Tribe pin and challenge badge.
Both young people and adults can agree on many other possible combinations that are suitable for each individual's interests, based on other environmental initiatives already developed within the NSO.
