Six months community development on Promoting Gender Equality And Empower Women.
We,the guides of Sharada Vidyalaya,Mangaluru,Dakshina Kannada,Karnataka worked on the topic-Promote Gender Equality and empower women.
We started our project on 5 November 2016 and ended it after 6 months i.e,on 29 April 2017. The work that we did are as follows:
5 November 2016: I Took the permission from our Guide Captain ,Parents,Headmaster,COH to initiate our work.
12 November 2016: In order to start our work,I thought that we will have to research and get knowledge about the topic. So we spent almost more than 2 hours for knowing information like why should we treat both males and females equally, what are the problems faced by the women of orthodox families and many such information.
19 November 2016: I called all the scouts and guides and of our school of class 7,8&9 and told them about the importance of taking action to improvise the lifestyle of women and the need to treat men and women equally. We gave them speeches.
26 November 2016: I spread awareness about the topic to my neighbors and to the residents of our locality and so did the others guides.
3 Dec 2016: We have a session in our school called as the parliament session. We took the best opportunity and performed a skit that we had planned a week back with the help of our junior guides. I am sure it indeed spread some message to the students of our school.
10 Dec 2016: Our school has 2 more branch schools-Vidhyaniketan and Shubhoday. So we three went to the both of these schools and told them about the reason why we came there and a must to treat everyone equally. It was like a guest lecture for the students of both the schools. Everyone agreed to us and interestingly listened to us.
17 Dec 2016: We had also arranged a small rally from our school to a place nearby. We included our junior guides to take part in the rally.Probably, all the pedestrians and residents of those places might have realized the need of the hour to treat everyone equally.
24 Dec 2016: It was our school day and we, by taking the permission of our principal, probably enlightened the gatherings by giving a performance like speeches during the formal function.
7 Jan 2017: We showed the videos regarding gender inequalities to the scouts and guides of class 5&6.There were also videos on the problems faced by women belonging to orthodox families and about the capacities of women. Children actively participated.
14 Jan 2017: Went to a village-town area called Neermarga and informed them that empowering women is very important.
21 Jan 2016: There is an Anganawadi near my house. So we went there as we knew that the teachers working there will be knowing more about these things and the measures taken by the government to stop these inequalities as these teachers are appointed by the government.
28 Jan 2017: I felt that it will be more effective if we would design some posters and pamphlets. It took more than 2 hours for me to design pamphlets...may be just few!!!
4 Feb 2017: We searched a lot and later on got an opportunity to interact with the members of a social group called-STREE SHAKTHI of Neermarga. This was a group of ladies who worked on the upliftment of women and were the philanthropist and they helped women who were facing discrimination by giving them some money every month. They help women in getting better life opportunities.
11 Feb 2017: I distributed poster and pamphlets in Ashoknagar, a place in Mangaluru along with the other 2 guides.
18 Feb 2017: Distributed Posters and Pamphlets in the interior parts of Kottara Chowki, a place in Mangaluru as we knew that there were some families facing a lot of discrimination over there.
25 Feb 2017: As we visited many places to spread awareness and distribute posters,we had acute shortage of posters and pamphlets. So we all did many more posters as distributing posters is the best way to spread awareness among people.
4 March 20167: There is a village in the outskirts of Mangaluru called Pedamale. So we went there to distribute posters.
11 March 2017: It was our exams.... So we didn't get chance to go out to do work. So we wrote our log and noted down all the activities that we did till date.
18 March 2017: We had exams and so we tried collecting all the proofs that we did.
25 March 2017: I thought that it will a good idea to have a discussion and debate with the members of the COH and our scout master. In this discussion the thoughts and views of many people changed and all agreed that all should be treated equally as men and women both can do the same amount of work and no one is inferior and no one is superior.
1 April 2017: as we had conducted many sessions for the students of our school regarding on the topic,we had also shared so much information with them about the steps taken by the government and about few ladies who suffered isolation but achieved success in their life. So i with the other 2 guides conducted a quiz to the students of classes 9&10 which lasted for more than 2 hours as we had kept prize distribution and prelims on the same day.
8 April 2017: We had 7 days camp the following week. So we thought of designing many more posters on the topic as we thought of proceeding with our CD project even during our 7 days camp.
15 April 2017: we distributed posters and pamphlets to the residents of Shimathoor, our camp site.
20 April 2017: We also had many extra posters. So we went to a place called Kinnigoli, at a distance from our camp site and we gave them those posters which indeed fascinated them.
29 April 2017: This was our last day of CD project. We all were sad and happy as well. We wrote and submitted our log book to our Guide captain.
We are sure that our project has got dome changes in the mentalities of at least few people and I am sure that gender inequalities will be abolished within next few years if people get aware about the need of the hour to see all genders in the same way and empower women. I am happy that we at least taught some of the women on how to raise voice against discrimination. In our project, we have mainly spread awareness and distributed posters as it is the best way to change the existing society and make it a better one.
THANK YOU.
