Revitalisation of Cub Programme SSA
Action:
- The Cub Programme was reviewed, updated and launched in April 2014.
- The programme is now significantly more flexible. In the past it had 4 levels and it was strictly done according to the age. There are now only two levels and more flexibility with the age of participants. It is further much less resource dependant, while retaining the educational outcomes from before.
- The Cub team launched the programme at PowWow, which is a national event for Pack Scouters. More than 120 Pack Scouters from 8 of the 10 regions were at the event and trained in the programmes.
- The Cub Team also did a road show where they visited four regions to launch the Cub programme to local scouters. They trained 348 Pack Scouters with this road show.
- A Working kit file was developed by a team of volunteers and assisted by the PR Manager and CEO. 10 Modules of programme content were developed that included Games, Yarns, Handcraft, Play acting, Advancement module, Singing.
- Additional Support was received in the provision of a reduced cost service for the printing of modules that made the selling price of the material more reasonable and enhanced the accessibility of the programme.
- New badges to fit the image of Scouting were designed, developed and implemented. The feedback on these has been positive.
- All the Cub interest badge requirements were revised and a booklet on the updated and new badges developed for the Cubs and Scouters.
- The Cub team also revised the Cub Warrant training material and courses to align with the new programme.
- New Cub characters and Jungle book characters were developed. The illustrations were done by a NGO that that specialises in comic drawings. They had a good reputation with a weekly football magazine, Supastrikers, in a Sunday newspaper.
- A Cub workbook that was developed was a change from previous versions where it is now much more child friendly and was translated into 2 indigenous languages on top of the English version.
- The annual challenges are becoming more relevant. The last year’s challenge was around addressing the issues of bullying.
- The team worked hard in developing Programmes on a Plate for 83 week’s of programmes. That is more than 2 years of programming. If these are used the Cub will go through the Silver and Gold Wolf advancement requirements over this period.
- Cub newsletter for Pack Scouters were introduced in 2018. It is sent out every 2 months. This contains informal training, programme relevant material and support.
