New beginnings – Lerato Project
Lillian Southee and Jeanette Angus led the project called "New beginnings" initiated by the Southern District, Gauteng. The project is for the Lerato Educational Center in Jackson Drift Township, Johannesburg. Since the beginning of it in October 2015 nearly 1,000 plants, herbs, vegetables and flowers have been planted. Trees are now shading the new homework room, a jungle gym was painted, classrooms have been decorated and the library has been organised. Children should be encouraged through the project to look after the plants, to take knowledge home and implement gardens and grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in the township community of Jackson's Drift. It should show learners that they could grow vegetables and eat what they planted, to promote healthy food at a low cost. In total 6 beds were dug up and planted by the young adults, Cubs, Scouts, Scouters and parents.
