FEED ME I’M HUNGRY - AN MoP PROJECT ON PROPER DISPOSAL OF SCHOOL RUBBISH

There is a challenge of proper waste management especially in schools in Ghana. Happy Kids School Scout Group decided to come up with innovative ways of keeping the school environment clean at all times. A Messengers of Peace project for proper sorting and disposal of school rubbish e.g. waste paper was initiated by the Scout group. This project aimed to educate Scouts and school children on the proper disposal of rubbish generated in their schools. Scouts were asked to write down the different rubbish that they generate in schools. Scouts decided to find an inexpensive way of collecting these rubbish. Schools and homes that use cooking oil in the yellow branded gallons were approached to donate their empty gallons. Leaders of the group joined the Scouts to turn the empty gallons into rubbish bins. Gallons were cut into shapes that would make them into rubbish containers. Scouts donated these rubbish containers to a few schools in the community. Hopefully the Scouts will go back to teach students of the schools on how to recycle waste paper rubbish into “papier maché” molded teaching aids. The schools surroundings became cleaner and the creativity of Scouts were sharpened during this process. Yellow branded gallons that have become waste nuisance themselves have been turned into rubbish bins. Other schools have been influenced by this MoP project and teachers are requesting to start Scout groups in their schools. This project has had an impact on other schools and homes of the scouts as they have transferred this knowledge to them. Indeed Scouts are feeding yellow gallons turned into rubbish bins.
