Biodiversity for Life
Bheki Sithole from Nkomazi District run a project titled Biodiversity for life, 160 Cubs, Scouts and Rovers were involved in
the project. Nkomazi District partnered with Mahushe Game Reserve. Instructors from Mahushe implemented a workshop on 4 different types of plants, invasive alien plants that need to be removed, alien plants that need permission to be planted, alien plants that shouldn’t be added anymore and indigenous plants.
The presentation was very interesting and motivated the Scouts to learn more about the subject of biodiversity in South Africa. To raise the interest the instructors asked questions to find out what the children knew about the subject. The presentation focused on the Identification of the indigenous plants and 3 categories of alien plants and their threats to local biodiversity. After the presentation they went around to identify the alien plants around the Mahushe premises. With the help of the instructors Scouts were able to identify alien plants.
The Scouts did not only have a lot of fun implementing the project, they raise awareness about the danger of alien plants amongst fellow Scouts who are going to share it with the community.
