Emmablomu lamachle
1st Mlilo Group located in Nsikasi, Mpumalanga, started an Indigenous Plants Project named Emmablomu lamachle. This Group is led by Scouter Lucy Magagula; it is formed of parents, Scouts, Cubs, volunteers and members of the Mlilo Eco-Club. Prior to the implementation of the project, the Group organised a workshop that was facilitated by instructors from the SANBI Botanic Gardens. On 26th November two instructors from the SANBI Botanical Garden came to Mlilo Primary School and taught the children about different types of plants. The presentation went very well; the instructors used posters as part of their presentation so that the children would be able to see and identify the different plants. The presentation focused on the definitions and identification of the indigenous plants as well as other categories of alien plants. During the presentation children were asked questions to test their knowledge on what they have learnt and all children responded very well. After the presentation children went outside to identify the alien plants around the school premises which they had seen on
the posters during the presentation. This was a very exciting activity and later the children were given a chance to ask questions like “how did alien plants come to South Africa?” All their questions were well answered. With the new knowledge acquired the Group was able to practice their new skills at home, explaining to their parents and families why the alien plants are bad for the biodiversity of South Africa. They also said that in future they will be aware not to plant
alien trees. The Eco-Club will also be using the information on the topics they have in their future projects. The children enjoyed the project; it had a great impact on their lives and the environment. The Group’s plan now is to apply for a District Funding Project to implement the project in the whole community of Nsikazi.
