Varsity Scout Division of Lagos State, Commemorate International Day of Peace 2019
The Varsity Scout Division of Lagos State Scout Council, The Scout Association of Nigeria; a University of Lagos based scout group, commemorated the 2019 International Day of Peace in a grand style.
The event, held at the Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Lagos, Nigeria recorded about 85 participants, including scouts and non-scouts alike.
Groups also in attendance included:
Involve Africa – a Pan- African youth driven development organization working to increase and strengthen young people’s involvement in governance processes, social progress and peace building in Africa.
TMME - an acronym for; The Master’s Mind Empire. A Nigerian RnB and Afro pop musical quartet, consisting of Marteenoh, Abolade Bobby, Xteel Fola and Mouzies.
Participants undergone sessions on the following topics:
- Scout Donation Platform and project management cycle: Activities on this topic enhanced participants’ understanding of project cycle and also related its phases to specific projects they have taken part in.
- Dialogue For Peace – Peacebuilding: Here, the elements of the Peacebuilding Map using the escalation and de-escalation pyramid were introduced, which fostered a better understanding of how conflict arises and ways to explore a possible conflict settlement, resolution, and transformation.
- Panda Badge – Biodiversity and Nature: During this activity, the new iNaturalist app that can be used by Scouts to learn more about biodiversity was introduced and explored.
- Waste Management, Climate Change, and Plastic Tide Turners Badge: Participants explored the different types of plastic and how long they remain in the sea and tried devised various means of managing them.
- Safe From Harm: Focusing on bullying, activities during this session unraveled the impact of bullying around the world, as well as measures adopted by various countries in tackling bullying. Participants created awareness on how to go about preventing bullying.
- Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature and Environment (SCENES) – Sustainability: Inspired by the activities from various SCENES projects, participants the sustainability aspect of their daily personal habits and also reflected on their daily waste management practices and proffered ways to lead a greener life.
At the end of the various sessions, participants made personal commitments to climate actions based on knowledge gained during the sessions. A general question and answer session rounded off the indoor sessions. A photograph session led to the close of the day’s business.
