Activity Instructions

Ahead of the activity:

  • Print and separate the 10 Principles of Dialogue, cutting each principle into individual words and scrambling them.

The Activity

  1. Form pairs, you will need at least 10 pairs (20 young people). If not possible, adapt the activity to 5 pairs.
  2. Give each pair one of the scrambled principles. They must rearrange the words to create a sentence
  • They will not know the sentence they must assemble at any time, except if the scout leader observes that the group will not unscramble their sentence before the time is up.
  1. Once each pair has rearranged their principle, they should read it aloud to the group.
  2. Create the full list of 10 Principles, by asking each pair to put their sentence in the middle of the group.
  3. Now, the leader should present the 10 Principles together as a collective (Each principle should be discussed equally. For more detailed information on each principle, refer to the D4P manual pg. 86
  4. Then, ask each pair to return to a quiet space and discuss in more detail the 1 principle they unscrambled;
  • What does this principle mean to them?
  • How do they interpret this principle?
  • Can they think of a time when they have seen an example of a principle like this in their life, scouting, school, family etc?
  1. After 5- 10 minutes, ask each pair to then summarize and share their reflection with the group
  • Invite thoughts, feedback or discussion around each principle.
Debriefing and Reflection

Please refer to the Learning Objectives above for each age group when explaining, facilitating, and recapping this activity. Select the questions relevant to the age group and their objectives.

  • Is there any one principle that you really connect with?
  • Was there anything you really resonated with or anything you see differently from someone else in the group?
  • Can you think of an example of where this principle will be useful in your life?
  • Why do you think these principles work well together and can support dialogue?
  • How can you share these principles with others and help them understand the importance of Dialogue?

As the adult leader, you should also encourage other reflection and questions based on your knowledge, experience and desired objectives
