YOUTHS RISING FOR A PLASTIC-FREE LAKE VICTORIA

Lake Victoria - Kisumu, Kenya, has been negatively affected by pollution, with plastics and single-use plastics being one of the major causes. This has made the lake lose its beneficial use to the community affecting the well-being of millions in Africa, calling for immediate actions, which involve changing our actions & habits, practicing responsible production & consumption - in general, putting the best foot forward towards conserving the environment, which is every persons' responsibility.

We founded a youth-led environmental conservation team to protect Lake Victoria from plastic pollution in Kisumu. Our activities included educating community members and youths and fellow scouts about plastic waste, launching the “Ziwa Safi” app, and promoting responsible production and consumption. We also organized community clean-ups in Lake Victoria and nearby markets to build hands-on experience and strengthen environmental stewardship.

We, as youths and community members are responsible for 80% conservation of the environment, committing us to ensuring we put the best foot forward for a cleaner, healthier planet. Knowledge and understanding is very basic for long lasting solutions to climate change. There's power in working in unity and purpose as young people towards a sustainable community. here's hope for a healthier, cleaner planet if we make a decision to choose sustainability.
