Succulent Hedge planting

Arrowe Park is a Scout campsite that has been owned by Scouts South Africa since the 1950s. Greening the campsite and helping to shield the campers in this segment from the neighbouring houses is an important priority.

Cuttings of an indigenous succulent shrub, Crassula ovata, were taken from a donor plant in a volunteer's garden. Scouts attending JOTA JOTI at the campsite planted the cuttings along the camp boundary fence as a patrol activity. 100 cuttings were planted this year, after planting 60 last year at JOTA JOTI

This is a sustainable, ongoing planting project - the cuttings have a high rooting success rate and are available for free from a donor who is involved in managing the campsite. The speed we can plant is only limited by the number of picks and shovels available- the soil is quite rocky so it takes considerable effort to dig the holes
