Somangalam Goes Green: Meendum Manjappai Campaign

The project was inspired by the growing plastic pollution in our villages and the urgent need to revive eco-friendly habits. Seeing the harmful impact of single-use plastics on health, soil, and water motivated us to bring back the traditional manjappai culture. The initiative aims to create awareness, encourage sustainable practices, and build a cleaner, greener community.

The project was executed with the strong support of the Somangalam Village President and active participation from the local community. With their guidance, a village rally and awareness sessions were organized. Students and volunteers interacted directly with residents, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic and promoting the use of manjappai, ensuring collective ownership and effective implementation.

The project taught us the importance of community participation and local leadership in driving sustainable change. We learned that clear communication and cultural connection make environmental messages more effective. Teamwork, planning, and adaptability were key learnings. Most importantly, the initiative reinforced that small, collective actions can create a lasting impact toward a plastic-free society.
