Scouting for Hope Kenya activates Scouts to do Smart Agriculture

Scouts from the greater Kisii county region in Kenya were inspired to consider modern ways of doing agriculture that entails using little inputs and maximizing on the possible outputs. Through the Scouting for Hope Kenya project which had organized the training the scouts learnt primarily about Multi-story bag gardening of vegetables and other forms of home produce. With the diminishing availability of arable land this was considered a futuristic way of ensuring food production and availability. In a country where food security is one of the top agendas of the government this was an effective way of scouts contributing to its success. “This project not only helps scouts conserve the little available resource our environment has to provide like water, nutrients & land but it utilizes the available used materials to be reused in the production of the vegetables like manure waste etc,” Said Mr. Lukania, the Program director Smart agriculture. The project that is designed not only to teach vulnerable scouts valuable agricultural skills that can generate resources for them to support the execution of their scout program but also to give them an opportunity to become self-reliant being once they attained adulthood. This is a chance for us to be able to really change the lives of this young people who had been earlier neglected by the society. It is a good thing scouting is there for them to give them the hope they really need, Said Mr. Odindo, a National Scout Board member Incharge of Community development. With the success of the pilot phase of this project at the first Centre it will be replicated to other childrens centre and with the commitment of the trained scouts a wave of scouting inspiration will be felt in the entire region.
