Psychosocial Care After Flash Flood

The disaster in Agam destroyed SDN 14 Labuah and left deep psychological scars for the children, who had to study in makeshift schools. We, the University of Indonesia Scouts, were moved by our belief that the Scouting method—joyful games, songs, and group dynamics—could create a safe space for trauma recovery. From there, we launched the "Cheerful Scouts" program as psychosocial support to restore their laughter and resilience.
The UI Racana team, along with the Agam Community Empowerment and Development Center (DKC) and Tanjung Raya Community Empowerment and Development Center (DKR) designed a psychosocial intervention at the emergency school, combining PHBS education with traditional Scout games. All conducted in a cheerful atmosphere that served as a space for emotional recovery, without separating learning from play, and always prioritizing joy and a sense of safety.
We learned that being present, playing together, and creating a joyful safe space is powerful psychosocial support. Genuine care through Scout games and shared laughter can heal young survivors. Emotional recovery doesn't need complex solutions—it starts with a smile and making them feel seen.
