Project Orion 3 - Rovering with Turtles

Project Orion 3 - Rovering with Turtles

The Project started with a session at Underwater World, Sentosa to prepare us with prior knowledge of sea turtles around the world and some of the species of turtle that we are likely to spot in our region. The session opened me to more environmental issues and how difficult it is for sea turtles to become fully grown before they have the ability to defend themselves from predators. I found out that it is important to do something to prevent these animals to be extinct before our next generation can see them live. The team started the project in Terengganu, Mayalsia for 2 weeks. The main activities that we have done were to help maintain the hatchery, which was already built by previous Orion teams. We also helped to set up the notice board near the hatchery for the villagers and visitors to gain awareness of the turtle conservation efforts over there. The team was also actively involved collating statistics of the hatchlings by selecting samples of hatchlings to measure the dimensions and also to recover the egg shells so that all hatchlings, whether live or dead, are accounted for. We were also engaged in night patrolling, where we were attached to the rangers to patrol along the beach line to look out for turtle laying eggs and also to make sure that the eggs are not being poached away by the poachers to sell off at a profit. I was inspired by the energy possessed by the young hatchlings to crawl all the way into the waters and disappear from our sight. They were on their way to the open sea, where unknown dangers pose a great threat to their survival in the wild. I learnt that it is important for one to be exposed to an unknown ground to train, so that he will become stronger than when he just started the journey. Other than works pertaining to turtle conservation, we also helped to improve the houses there by giving some of them a fresh coat of paint, which was supposed to help the villagers look forward to a brighter future. The other major takeaway from this project is that staying in a village under a different environment gave me a different experience. We must be very lucky to be living in Singapore, because it is easy for us to get whatever we want, so long as we got the money. But in the village, even you have the money; u might not even get what you want. We have a well-established infrastructure where electricity and water can be easily acquired. But for the villagers, they will protect these basic necessities and will only use them when necessary. Simple toys and games can keep the children occupied while in Singapore; youths get bored even playing computer games. We must constantly remind ourselves that it is not easy for us to get the lifestyle we have right now and we must always remind ourselves that whenever we think that our life is bad, there is always somebody worse off. Back in Singapore after the project, I conducted a sharing session with a troop of Singapore scouts to share my experiences with them and encourage them to take action, to make their environment a better place for everyone.
