Meendum Manjappai Rally at Poonthandalam Village
The idea for this project emerged from witnessing the growing plastic pollution in Poonthandalam village and its negative effects on cleanliness and the natural surroundings. The excessive use of single-use plastics highlighted the need to reintroduce the eco-friendly manjappai. This initiative was started to spread awareness, promote sustainable daily practices, and preserve the village environment for the coming generations.
The project was implemented with the guidance of the Poonthandalam Village President and the active involvement of local community members. A village rally and awareness programme were conducted, engaging students and volunteers. Interactions with residents explained the harmful effects of plastic, and the benefits of using manjappai, encouraging collective responsibility and long-term adoption of eco-friendly practices.
This project taught us the value of engaging the community and working closely with local leaders to promote environmental responsibility. We realized that hands-on awareness and clear communication make eco-friendly practices more effective. Coordinated teamwork and public pledges strengthened commitment. Most importantly, it demonstrated that small, united actions at the village level can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
