A lunch box made by selling old books
On a cold day in October 2018, we were told from News and people around us, that there are many people who has nothing to eat even in Korea. Peoples who gave up their lives and became homeless, the elderly people living alone, and runaway teenagers seemed to be struggling because of their unfortunate circumstances. I came to talk with my friends about the ways to help them.
When I saw an ad buying used book in the street, I suddenly felt 'that’s it.' Since then, I prepared application to “Messenger of Peace (MOP)” project to collect the used book in our scout troop with our cup, scout and leaders. We started promoting the project and collecting used books in our home and we also asked relatives and friends to donate the used book not in use. Through the 5 weeks of project period, we can gather more books than we thought. We were able to collect more than 3,000 books and then we sell some clean books in a used book store at high price, also sell them at flea market at lower price, and then sell the balance books at junk shop.
Our fundraising amount is KRW710,000 (USD630) and we donated it to a team named “Vincentius” in our catholic church, which is in charge of social pastoral. Our donations in “Vincentius” was able to deliver the lunch to 142 unfortunate neighbors, elderly people living alone, and runaway teenagers.
As a scout, we were very pleased to be able to truly practice the Scout rule, "to help other people at all times" and I realized that I am helping the world with the joy of service and sharing.
Thank you for read :)
