Injongo Primary School developing reading skills

In the Cape Flats region of Cape Town, there is a significant need to strengthen literacy and basic reading skills among children. Recent data shows that more than half of Grade 4 learners in the province cannot read for meaning, highlighting persistent challenges in early literacy development. Not being able to read significantly impacts theirs future prospects.
The Scouting-in-Schools team at Injongo Primary School ran a literacy campaign where the learners needed to read at least 6 books, discuss and retell 3 of them, show that they can use a dictionary, and explain basic elements of speech. They also wrote and shared their own short stories, visited a library to learn how to find information, and how books were classified at the library. Some got their first library card too!
The project helped the learners become more confident in reading aloud and improved their vocabulary. It also made them explore new ideas and cultivate a lifelong love for reading and learning,. The library card activity motivated learners to borrow books and share what they had read.
