Gilwell SNP Sandakan inspires at RDC Sepilok
To engage the community and demonstrate to local leaders that Gilwell Scouts Nature Park Sandakan is actively shouldering an active role as an environmental education centre in Sandakan. On World Environment Day 2022, with support and opportnity from Sabah Forstry Dpartmen, we were able to interact and educate everyon to be more considerate and aware of our Earth's existing conditions, environment, take action to spread awareness and motivate others to do the same.
Gilwell Scouts Nature Park Sandakan showcased our edu-environmental programs and activities, highlighting youth involvement and committment at Rainforest Discovery Centre or RDC to celebrate World Environment Day 2022. It was an exciting weekend as we were well received by visitors, community leaders, Government officials and lots of excitable children! Visitors included Sabah State Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. Robert Ong, eminent entomologist Dr. Arthur Chung and more.
We reckon having engaged 200 to 400 visitors - including children, who were were excited at the sight of our Scouts and Rovers in full uniform - during the the weekend. We explained and showed our educational environmental programs and activities involving our stingless bees, endemic herbal nursery, orchid trail and much more. We highlighted how everyone can reduce their carbon footprint, reduce or entirely eliminate use of single-use plastic, using alternative energy like solar ad much more.
Community engagement and involvement are important aspects of Gilwell Scouts Nature Park Sandakan as we are shouldering a role in environmental education and sustainabilty. Having youths speak up during the weekend about conserving and protecting our fragile environment, especially as we are facing climate change, rising temperature and extreme weather, impacting our rainforest, sent a very strong message to everyone. Everyone could relate to it and see it happening firsthand.
