Futures Brighten, When Rural Schools Light Up

In Malawi, students must pass national exams to advance from primary to secondary school, and again from secondary school to public university. Those who fail are left with expensive private schools. Yet many rural schools lack access to the national grid, and most students come from homes without electricity. This makes studying difficult: some rely on candles, others on torches, and many whose families can't afford either end up dropping out.
We set up a GoFundMe page and invited friends and family to donate to the Brighten Futures: When Rural Schools Light Up project. With their support, we raised enough funds to purchase solar panels, batteries, wires, and bulbs. We also reached out to the District Education Manager’s Office for help identifying the schools most in need of solar lighting, and they assisted us in selecting the beneficiaries. With guidance from a qualified electrician, we installed solar systems in all 10 schools.
I learned that real change starts by listening. The biggest challenges weren’t just technical, they were about trust. When we involved teachers, parents, and students from day one, the project became theirs, not just ours. I also learned that small interventions, like a single solar light, can remove huge barriers and give a child the confidence to keep dreaming.
