Erumaiyur village Plastic-Free Drive
Erumaiyur's proximity to our institution and its adoption under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan program inspired this initiative. Witnessing plastic waste accumulating in this 567-household village's streets and agricultural areas demanded immediate action. The Meendum Manjappai campaign offered a sustainable, culturally rooted solution. Partnering with village leaders, we saw an opportunity to create lasting environmental change while strengthening our commitment to rural development
We partnered with Erumaiyur's village president and community leaders to conduct door-to-door awareness campaigns across 567 households. Together, we distributed cloth bags, organized cleanup drives, and engaged local shopkeepers. The president mobilized residents while Sairam Institutions' Unnat Bharat Abhiyan team provided resources, creating sustained community participation and behavioral change
Local leadership partnership is essential for genuine community buy-in. Sustained behavioral change requires consistent engagement beyond single events. Traditional solutions resonate when presented culturally. Small villages like Erumaiyur enable deeper household-level impact. Collaboration between educational institutions and rural communities creates mutual learning opportunities, strengthening both environmental action and social responsibility
