Eluxolweni PS empowering learners to read

In the Cape Flats of Cape Town in SA, there is a clear need to strengthen literacy and basic reading skills. Many children still struggle with reading. Recent data shows that about 62% of Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning, a figure that highlights the limiting impact that literacy challenges will have on a child's ability to succeed in school and later in life.
Eluxolweni Primary School's Scouting-in-Schools team stepped up to empower their learners to read. Through practical activities the Scouts read books, discussed and retold 3 of these stories, explained basic parts of speech, and showed how to use a dictionary by explaining words. They also shared and wrote their own short stories, and visited a local library to learn how to locate information and understand library classification systems.
The process of going to the library and getting cards gave learners a sense of ownership over books. The learners were encouraged to read and improve their creativity. The project also emphasized that learner's could use the library for projects and assignment but also for their own reading benefit. Learners learned that reading can be exciting. "
