Cubs light their sustainable City
Cub Scouts demonstrated interest in how electric energy was generated, and how the electricity got to our houses. We took the opportunity to demonstrate in practical terms, how fossil fueled energy plants worked, and, surely, how clean energy is also generated.
Day 1, diagnosed what they all knew about energy over all, by having them freely draw pictures. Day 2, based on what they knew, we demonstrated how energy was created by rotating a small toy DC motor. We rotated it with steam from a pressure cooker (simulated fire source coming from fossil fuels), with water from a hose, and, finally with wind from a Pinwheel. Day 3 and 4, we created a city model, that was lit with solar panels, fully decorated by the Cub
The power of a meaningful playful activity can have on the children's educational process. They not only loved being able to decorate the model, but mainly, their faces lit when they made the connection between the real world energy supply and the model's energy supply was made.
