Changing mindset towards plastics

Kirwan Cub Scout pack has a keen interest in the environment and they wanted to ensure that we all learnt more about plastic and how it has an impact on the world. Our goal was to complete the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge and learn about how plastic and what actions we could take to make a difference.

We completed the activities at our den. On investigating the different type of plastics and what could go in the recycle in we realised there was a need to remove additional plastic from our normal bins. Our project revolved around the idea of 'soft plastics' and how we could remove them from the bins. We decorated a calico bag to be able to use at home.
It is difficult to know the exact impact on the community as it is a mindset that we are trying to change. Each of the cubs had discussions with their familes to make changes to the way they use plastics and how to recycle. This ultimately would impact quite a few people as our attitudes and actions improve the world.
We have learnt that the majority of plastic that ends up in the oceans are beverage bottles. It is our responsibility to reduce the use of these single use bottles or at the very least upcycle them into other products. The Cubs have also become more aware of the problem of waste and how they need to change the mindset they have to its use. We hope that we are able to be responsible users in the future.
