Blackwood Joeys thought about what they would to do to help their community. They kept coming back to helping animals, and someone suggested one animal rescue place. However, we eventually settled on another really local group that is not so well known or supported by the public, called ‘Native Animal Network’. I called Anne after some research and found that they operated on a very limited donation budget and would be happy to be involved and would also be able to visit us with some real joeys. Nearby Mobs Belair and Aberfoyle Park Joeys joined us, and Native Animal Network arrived with a helper and 3 joeys and a possum! The (real) joeys came in their own hanging ‘pouches’, and loved having cuddles and pats and were given their bottles while there. One was so curious he had to go for a hop around the room, much to the hilarity of the Joeys and parents. The possum was awake as it was dark outside by then, but did keep trying to burrow into Anne’s jumper. They accept joeys and other marsupials from any age, especially ones found orphaned by traffic accidents so they told the Joey Scouts that even if they come across a dead or injured kangaroo, to ask their parent to check for a pouch and for any young. Once hand reared, they can never return to the wild, so the Network has many full grown hand reared roos at the main property in the Adelaide Hills, and all come when they are called. Goods requested and donated included cereal (weetbix, cornflakes and oats), tissues, plain biscuits and cash. We handed over a very large box of these items and envelope of cash
