Back to Manjappai at Sethupattu village

The inspiration for this project came from observing the growing plastic waste problem in Sethupattu village and its impact on daily life, health, and the environment. Seeing plastic bags used everywhere from small shops to households motivated us to bring back the habit of using manjappai. The community’s openness to change encouraged us to take this step.

The project was executed with the active support of the Sethupattu Village President and local community members. Awareness meetings were conducted, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic. Students and volunteers distributed cloth bags and interacted with residents. A pledge was taken by villagers to avoid single-use plastics and adopt manjappai in their daily lives.

Through this project, we learned that meaningful change begins at the grassroots level. Community involvement and leadership support are crucial for success. Simple conversations can create strong awareness, and leading by example builds trust. The project taught us teamwork, responsibility, and the power of collective action in promoting sustainable habits and environmental care.
