Peace begins with small words
Peace begins with small words:
Every April and May, the Association of Scouts Ecuador (ASE) carries out activities that create a positive impact. This year our Cub Pack joined World Scouting's Messengers of Peace initiative, exploring how peace begins with the small things we do every day.
As a leader from a different culture (I am British living in Ecuador) and generation, I sometimes found myself comparing today's Cubs with my own childhood experiences. These activities reminded me that peace is best taught through fun, practical experiences.
The Cubs decorated a "magic words" box, filling it with words like "thank you," "good job" and "have a good day." There was plenty of laughter too. "Why do you have so many boxes of tea?" they asked. "You put milk in your tea?" My British tea habit caused almost as much discussion as the activity itself.
Each Cub then traced around their hand and wrote five promises to practice over the next month. Some were thoughtful promises to help their families, while one Cub proudly wrote, "I will keep my socks clean." Living in a very dusty part of Quito, that's a bigger challenge than it sounds—and one I realized I should probably make myself!
Over the following weeks, we kept the activity alive by celebrating when the Cubs naturally used their "magic words" or kept one of their promises. It transformed a single meeting into a habit-building exercise.
As our sixer Isabel reflected: "I learned that people don't just have one specific word to express the peace they carry within, but there are many words and ways to express the peace we feel."
It was a wonderful reminder that peace doesn't begin with grand gestures. It begins with the words we choose and the habits we build every day.
