Empowering Youth Against Gender-Based Violence

Scouting is about service, learning, and action. When I was invited to take a workshop on Gender-Based Violence Laws in India by the Imaara Survivor Support Foundation in association with Shree Geeta Bhavan Trust in Chennai, I saw an opportunity to merge education with the Messengers of Peace (MoP) movement. The workshop focused on key legislations like the Domestic Violence Act and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Instead of a lecture, we conducted an interactive activity where 10 groups crafted legal scenarios around assigned laws. For example, the BNS group created a case based on rape laws, while others worked on domestic violence and workplace harassment. Each group identified applicable laws and presented their findings, making legal learning practical and engaging. Participants gained a clearer understanding of gender-based violence laws, the ability to recognize violations, and a sense of responsibility to advocate for justice. By integrating this with the MoP initiative, we empowered young people to be proactive change-makers in their communities. Scouting isn’t just about adventure—it’s about standing up for what is right. By combining legal awareness with the MoP movement, we equip scouts to lead the fight against gender-based violence, ensuring they not only learn but also lead.
