Scouting Empowering Teen Mothers Through Education
Malawi has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in sub-Saharan Africa, with nearly 29% of girls becoming mothers before the age of 18. In my community, early pregnancy often forces young girls to drop out of school, limiting their opportunities and trapping them in cycles of poverty. Many teen mothers struggle with economic hardship, lack of support, and societal stigma, making it difficult to rebuild their lives.
Through a scout donation platform, we supported teen mothers to return to school and build sustainable livelihoods. We provided school supplies to help them re-enroll, trained them in sack and bucket gardening under the “Food for Life” initiative to improve income, food security, and nutrition, and distributed solar bulbs so they could study safely at night. The project also integrated the mothers into the Scouting movement, fostering community, leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
I learnt that through practical plus emotional support works best together. Giving school supplies and solar bulbs solved immediate barriers for teen mothers. I also learnt that Community leaders unlock trust and access. We couldn’t have reached or mobilized the teen mothers without working through community leaders first. When local leaders vouch for the project, participation and ownership go up.
