It's Okay Not To Be Okay
The project was inspired by the growing need to create safe and supportive spaces where young people and community members can openly talk about mental health. Through our involvement in Scouting, we recognised that many people experience stress, emotional pressure and other mental health challenges but may be afraid to speak about them because of stigma and fear of judgement. We were motivated by the belief that mental well-being is an important part of living a healthy and peaceful life.
The project was implemented as a one-day Trails of Mental Health hike at Dedza Mountain on 6 July 2026. A team of 15 Scout volunteers took responsibility for planning, coordination, mobilisation, facilitation, participant support and safety throughout the activity. We brought together 23 other participants, including teachers and community members, creating an inclusive environment for learning, interaction and reflection.
We learned that mental health awareness can be effectively promoted through simple community activities such as hiking, physical exercise, nature connection and open conversations. The project showed us the importance of teamwork, proper planning and creating safe spaces where people can share their experiences without fear of judgement. We also learned that mental health is a shared community responsibility and that Scouts can play an important role as Messengers of peace.
