Vegetables for a healthy life
1st Mhlala Community Scout Group in Nkomazi District embarked on a Food for Life project titled Vegetables for a healthy life. This project was led Sizwe Mdluli. 30 Scouts planted a vegetable garden to help improve food security in the community. The vegetables were used to supplement the diet of more than 135 children at a nearby day-care-centre every day. The Group identified the space for the garden and defined the size. They then planted different vegetables ranging from lettuce, tomatoes, spinach and onions. The Scouts took turns in making sure that the garden was watered properly. The plants were watered every day and were protected against monkeys and other animals. During the process Scouts learned much about planting vegetables and taking care of the garden. They also learned it that was possible to improve their situation with their own work and to be of service to the community. The harvest was used to enrich the food for the children coming to the Daisy-Day-Care- Centre. The vegetable garden is now used by the Day-Care-Centre. The children had fun by making the garden and they learned gardening skills as well as
responsibility. The Scouts and the children from the Day-Care-Centre were looking forward to the harvest. The project was successful because there was community engagement, Scouts and non-scouts, cared for the garden every day, took turns in
participating in activities such as watering the plants.
