Scouts Hereford & Worcester Africa 2019
The UK Scout Association's Vision from 2013 - 2018 was #YouShape.
From the forums that were run within the County of Hereford & Worcester a common theme kept coming back.
Scouts wanted trips abroad with the opportunity to take part in projects that benefit communities around the world while learning new skills, making new friends and engaging in Scouting activities with purpose.
The team is made up of 10 Scout Leaders and 5 Network members. One of the team is working towards their Scouts of the World Award. The longer term aim of this project is that from this team will come the core leadership team for the next trip to support the inclusion of Explorer Scouts within the team and project work whilst maintaining knowledge of the locations.
The trip is 4 weeks in duration, 2 weeks in Northern Kenya and 2 weeks in Tanzania working on the following projects:-
1, Re-building the catchment system for a 100,000 litre community storage tank in Bubisa. This project also involves the re-construction of a corrugated roof over the tank to help stop evaporation and dust ingress.
2, Building a new community water tank (10,000 litres) in Laisamas. This will be built to support a community church and local school.
3, The starting of a female menstrual health programme in Marsabit and the surrounding area. During our stay in Kenya 3 members of the team will be starting a train the trainer style course talking about menstrual health and teaching women how to make menstrual kits to enable young women to access a full school education. This will be supported after our trip with identified local trainers supporting the project going forwards.
4, School education visits to engage young people in conversation and help identify & develop projects for future trips.
