recycling, reuse and re-creating in Mitchell's Plain

1st Woodlands is situated in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, this Group is led by Ansley Spies. They embarked on a recycling project as means to educate their community about social and economic issues. They wanted to create awareness because they felt that people need to take responsibility and local ownership against littering, which will help reduce waste. The Group’s main goal was to make difference in their community through recycling, reuse and re-creating. The Group collected and sorted waste into various items such as soft drink bottles, dish washer bottle tops, paper and plastic. Some of the waste was used to make creative mind games such as drafts, and other was used to educate the community about becoming waste wise and turning their kitchen waste into an organic gardens. Children took about four hours to sort the waste, clean the bottles and tops. When they were done, they learned about recycling, played different games, which they enjoyed the most. One of the partners Church Brigade also gave input by making costumes out of recycled materials and a modeling show was hosted with these costumes. At the end of a very successful project the Group felt that their objective of creating awareness by taking local ownership against littering and reducing waste was met. Another partner, the Men’s club (Circle concern) made usable music instruments out of waste tins and pieces of timber and they invited the Scouts and Cubs to join them in making these instruments. And the Women’s club (Social chat room) made arts, crafts and jewellery out of recycled waste plastic, newspaper, and sticks, they made nice and items such as laundry baskets, pen holders and other gift sets.
