Recyclabe Bottle Drive and Battery Collection | 1st Centre Lake Scout Group of Burnaby, Canada
Youth of all ages came together to collect refundable bottles and household batteries for this Messengers of Peace Project. Twice a year, our group fundraisers money by collecting bottles and returning them at recycling depots. The money collected is used to buy new camping equipment and to subsidize costs for youth and families. This year, we added another component: a household battery collection! This Messengers of Peace Project focused on the conservation of environment. Too often batteries are thrown out in the garbage, where they leak toxins and heavily pollute land and water. To address this, our Venturer Company handed out notices to the local neighbourhood, informing them that they were collecting household batteries and rightfully disposing of them at a recycling centre. This project ran in parallel with the bottle drive and turned out to be successful! Even though we don't receive funding for recycling batteries, our Venturer Scouts learned about conservation of environment and the effect of improperly disposed batteries, all while bringing awareness of this topic to the local community! Overall, this was project was successful in many dimensions by raising funds for the scout group, educating our scouts and community, and creating a positive environmental impact!
